I. Working Principle of Single and Double Mechanical Seals
A single mechanical seal means only one side of the mechanical seal is in contact with the sealed medium, and leakage from the other side usually escapes to the atmosphere. A double mechanical seal refers to a sealing structure where both sides of the mechanical seal are exposed to the sealed medium.
The biggest difference between them lies in sealing performance:
For a single mechanical seal, only the contact on one side with the medium needs to be considered, so effective sealing can be achieved relatively easily. A double mechanical seal requires proper contact on both sides at the same time; therefore, it delivers more stable sealing performance than a single mechanical seal.
II. Application Scope of Single and Double Mechanical Seals
Owing to its superior sealing performance, the double mechanical seal has a broader range of applications. It is normally used in demanding working conditions such as high pressure, high speed, and services involving hazardous substances. For general working scenarios, the sealing effect of single mechanical seals can satisfy operational requirements, so they are widely adopted.
III. Maintenance of Single and Double Mechanical Seals
For single mechanical seals, it is generally sufficient to apply lubricating oil to the friction surface between the seal head and bearing. Double mechanical seals demand more rigorous maintenance:
First, replace sealing rings regularly to maintain sealing performance. Second, pay close attention to the status of seal flush fluid to ensure the sealed medium does not disrupt normal operation of the mechanical seal. Finally, special care shall be taken during installation of double mechanical seals to ensure proper contact on both sides.
